I WONDER YOU

Random Studio X Koos Breen

“Koos Breen creates form; and often form dictates the content of his work. Through a process he describes as associative morphology, whatever one form reminds him of is the direct inspiration for the next. Random Studio likes to make people wonder; to remind them there is no such thing as one reality.”

Using the words I WONDER YOU as a jumping off point, Random Studio and Koos Breen engaged in a collaborative exercise of creative ping pong. The rules stated that each iteration must be a reaction to the previous, each must be completed in 48 hours and there will be four iterations in total.

Firstly, Koos designed a fantastical poster, which was subsequently brought to life as an animation by Random. In reaction Koos constructed a virtual sculpture which then became the centrepiece for a VR experience, executed by Random.

To encapsulate the collaboration, to celebrate the new year and as a gesture of new beginnings, 60 silk scarves bearing the original artwork were sent to friends and clients.

ITERATION ONE

Koos Breen

I WONDER YOU. Wonder as in admire. I tried to connect the different associations I had after our first conversations: Random = technology minded = speed = formula 1 / Random = playful approach = game = balls / Random = creating experiences that blur bounderies = optical illusions. These thoughts defined the visual language for this design.

ITERATION TWO

Random Studio

At a certain point we were looking at Koos’ strong graphic motif with the highest zoom factor, being inspired by the arising shapes. We imagined those shapes three dimensional, extruded, like sculptures or even architecture. In addition to step into the third dimension, the radio wave motion in Koos' design gave us the idea of a future spatial design tool, like a huge 3D printer, extruding architectural shapes in realtime from animated 2D input.

ITERATION THREE

I felt very much attracted to the angular details of the animation of iteration two. It made me think of those beautiful marble quarries. I imagined that under the flat (concrete?) surface of the design a huge future gallery can arise. First I thought about making a 3D printed piece of furniture for this space, but I thought that was a bit too obvious. So since it made me also think about those quarries I decided to make a piece out of marble. The intention was to make a piece of furniture that would be able to compete with the huge space. It ended up being more a sculpture that can be stacked in lots of different ways.

ITERATION FOUR

Random Studio

A graphic design work. An animation. Sculptures. And the thought of a huge gallery – maybe we were designing these pieces to show them all together in one exhibition place? We thought that it should be really epic. So we created this place as a VR experience to wrap up our creative interplay.
